Arizona’s Sheriff Joe to Be Sued By Justice Department For Civil Rights Violations

Sheriff Joe Arpaio has long been a controversial figure on the American law enforcement landscape for his questionable practices in treating those taken into custody or jailed in Maricopa County.

Those who admire the law enforcement agents ways believe his stances on prison being unpleasant and strongly suspicious views of immigrants make for a safer jurisdiction. Critics argue that his practices violate civil rights and themselves skirt the laws, which protect the accused and imprisoned as well as law abiding Americans.

But it appears Sheriff Joe, as he is known across the country, is going to be called to account for his actions. On Wednesday, the Justice Department announced plans to sue Arpaio for alleged civil rights violations (such as profiling Latinos) following failed negotiations with the sheriff and his department to institute some checks and balances and reassure the Latino community that the law exists to protect them, too.

Among other allegations, Arpaio has been accused by the Justice Department of cultivating a “culture of disregard for basic constitutional rights” among his staff and pushing legal boundaries in regards to proper investigation practices.
