Marine biologists who are working off the coast of New Zealand have discovered a bunch of unknown fish species as well as some really rare ones. Granted they had to go more than a mile down but still these are some pretty scary looking fish.

These discoveries were made by New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research from nets at varying depths of the Chatham Rise which is a part of a network of underwater plateaus, mountains, ridges, and canyons.

Here are some images courtesy of National Geographic of the fish that they found.

Steven has been around the tech world long enough to see most of the stuff we think of cool happen before which leads to a certain bit of cynicism that has contributed to him being known as the cranky old fart of the Internet. Besides sharing some of the goodness that he finds with you here at 42x you can also find him curating some digital goodness at Winextra (tech type stuff) and Rotten Gumdrops (for your daily dose of WTF).
