Gay Stylist Drops NM Governor Over Same Sex Marriage Stance

It almost seems a bit too much of a humorous cliche to be true, but New Mexico governor Susana Martinez has to either change her stance on gay marriage or get her hair did somewhere else- her openly gay stylist is refusing Martinez’s custom due to her stance on the civil rights issue.

This is the second time in the past few weeks that a politician has been refused service at an establishment due to their opposition to same sex marriage, as a Tennessee senator who sponsored the “Don’t Say Gay” legislation was shunted at the Bistro at the Bijou in Knoxville. Martinez had been seeing in-demand hairstylist Antonio Darden, but no longer- Darden tells a local news source:

“The governor’s aides called not too long ago, wanting another appointment to come in… Because of her stances and her views on this I told her aides no. They called the next day, asking if I’d changed my mind about taking the governor in and I said no again.”

In response to Martinez’s views that marriage should be between a man and a woman, Darden says:

“I think it’s just equality, dignity for everyone… I think everybody should be allowed the right to be together. My partner and I have been together for 15 years.”

Despite her gay marriage stance, Martinez has also garnered criticism from gay rights opponents for appointing an openly gay man in the past. Hopefully, the press given Darden due to his bold stance will make up for losing what is probably his most notable client.
