Aziz Ansari Follows Louis CK’s Successful $5 Download Model, Releases Show Online

Late last year, Louis CK (who is probably the funniest comedian of our generation) flipped the DRM script when he released an exclusive comedy special directly to fans, asking them to pay $5 and not torrent it on the honor system- and in what is probably a good sign for comedy fans in general, Aziz Ansari is following CK’s lead.

The original experiment was ballsy to say the least, as fans could have downloaded and torrented it against the comic’s wishes. But in just 11 days, Louis CK had grossed over $1.1 million dollars, declaring the experiment a success and donating a share larger than the one he kept from the proceeds to charity. At the time, the innovative delivery method seemed to prove the theory that piracy becomes a far smaller issue when fans are allowed to manage media in the way they choose and are not gouged for it- and Ansari agrees:

“It seems like this is the thing to do at this moment when so much is changing and nobody’s really figured out how to do anything… In this era, the way people consume media, the way people release media has not caught up.”
