Trayvon Martin’s Mom Says She’d Give George Zimmerman a Chance to Apologize

Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, has commented on Florida special prosecutor’s decision to charge shooter George Zimmerman with second degree murder in the death of her son.

Since Martin’s killing in late February, the case has become nationally divisive on social media and in the news. First gaining traction on sites like Twitter and Facebook, calls for justice in the case went mainstream in mid-March, to the relief of the grieving Martin family. While the arrest of Zimmerman is probably of some comfort to Fulton and Trayvon’s father Tracy Martin, the persistent grief the family is experiencing is palpable in Fulton’s recent comments during an Associated Press interview.

When asked about Zimmerman’s arrest, Fulton says that she still hopes her son’s killer would be remorseful- an emotion that has not come across in filtered comments from Zimmerman, on his website, or in the remarks his brother Robert Zimmerman has made to media outlets. Fulton says:

“I would probably give him an opportunity to apologize. I would probably ask him if there were another way that he could have settled the confrontation that he had with Trayvon, other than the way it ended, with Trayvon being shot.”

This afternoon, Zimmerman was booked on the charge in Florida.
