Documenting The Lives Of Wolves – By Living With Them For Six Years [Pics]
How do we begin to understand one of our more misunderstood, and in some cased feared and reviled, animals?
Well if that animal is the wolf and you are the Dutcher’s then you spend six years (1990 to 1996), all year round, in one of the world’s biggest wolf enclosures with no electricity and just a tent. Then you set to becoming a part of their lives so that you can document them in their habitat on both film and in images.
By making themselves a part of the wolves world from when they were pups Jim, 69, and Jamie, 50, Dutcher managed to form an incredible bond with the animals which provided them with a really unique insight into the lives and behavior of wolves.
‘Everything was on the wolves’ terms. We never approached them, they came to us if they wanted to.
‘When we would get up in the morning, and left our tent, they would greet us as they would greet each other. They would each come over and whine and lick our faces, then, as soon as it started, it ended and they went about their business.
‘We never tried to dominate the wolves in anyway, in turn, the wolves never tried to dominate us nor submit to us. We kept things very neutral, we didn’t want our presence to affect how they behaved toward each other. We were a bit like wall paper.
