Ray William Johnson Is A YouTube Millionaire

YouTube streaming videos isn’t just about showcasing cuddly cats and singing babies, every now and again a bonafide YouTube star is born and none of those independent stars are more successful that Ray William Johnson, the first independent video maker to earn $1 million annually from the service.

Ironically Williams makes his money by creating clips in which he makes fun of other YouTube clips, essentially using YouTube videos to create money from YouTube videos.

Williams’ show airs two times a week and currently attracts more than 5 million regular viewers under the name RayWJ.

So how does he make that money? Ray earned somewhere in the vicinity of $3,000 to $9,000 per every 2 million YouTube viewers he receives. We assume he’s closer to Google’s $9,000 cap considering his popularity and importance to the site for that reason.

In fact there are “several hundred” partners who made more than $100,000 last year from Google, that’s up 80% from 2010.

According to one industry expert:

“This is a microcosm of what’s going on in the overall media landscape. We’re moving from a scaled mass media to more hyper-local, niche media.”

With RayWJ bringing in more viewers then some smaller cable network shows the $1 million annual earnings, potentially more, is well deserved.
